#1 Nice to Meet You

One foggy morning I was driving on a 2-lane backroad to work twenty miles away, rushing as usual, because I tended to arrive at work only minutes before starting time.

Back then, 16 years ago or so, I remember being frustrated in my efforts to determine whether there was really ‘anybody out there’, a guide, a god, a guardian…anybody.

Exasperated, I said aloud something to the effect of “well if there’s really anybody out there, I sure wish you’d let me know so I can stop wondering about it!”

Immediately, my words having barely left my mouth, came an answer. It was a clear, strong voice as if someone were sitting right next to me in the front seat. “Slow down” it said. “It’s a foggy morning and someone may not see the stop sign at the intersection ahead.”

I hit my brakes instantly slowing down my car and looked around bewildered. What in the hell? Who said that? Was there somebody in my backseat? Where did that voice come from? Only seconds ticked by before an intersection was in sight. While I was still a few hundred feet away, a red pickup truck roared right through the intersection. The driver never saw the stop sign, never even tapped their brakes.

If the voice wouldn’t have warned me to slow down, that truck could have T-boned my car. It was a hair-raising moment, my skin had goosebumps, it was surreal like I was watching a film on a screen. From that moment forward, I no longer wondered whether there was ‘anybody out there.’ I felt it to the depths of me, with the same certainty that the sun will rise tomorrow, that an invisible something or someone does exist, that we don’t go through our journey on earth alone, unescorted, unprotected. “Hello, my Soul, so nice to meet you.”

Yes, yes, yes! This is how I got my apartment and how I found my house. I came to town, found an apartment, but had left the cash deposit at my parent's house more than an hour away. I drove to that house and then back. Upon returning to town, the property manager said he'd leased the apartment I had my heart set upon. I pulled into a grocery store parking lot, went in and got the newspaper, and pouted. I looked through the newspaper, called the number, and there you were, and there was my apartment! I found my house almost the same way. I looked and looked. Then a friend suggested I check Craig's List - of all…
